Topical Anesthetic

Topical anesthetic reduces the slight discomfort associated with the insertion of the needle. It is effective up to a depth of 2-3mm. Although its application is beneficial for reducing patient discomfort during the initial phase of local anesthetic administration, It may be a disadvantage in children if the taste is disagreeable to the patient. It is available in gel, liquid, ointment, patch, and pressurized spray forms. Topical anesthetics may be applied to the skin to relieve pain caused by sunburn or other minor burns, or before dressing changes when wounds are extensive. Do not use this product for children younger than 2 years due to the risk of serious side effects. They work by blocking nerves from sending pain signals to the brain.
